Veteran Dedication: LVRSL Dawn Service 2018:
This morning we honoured and dedicated our dawn service to one of our World War One veterans and Lenah Valley RSL founding members, Walter Robert Dann.
Walter or Wally as he liked to be called enlisted at Glenora and at the time he thought it would be a great adventure and surely better than the hard work associated with running the farm.
On enlistment Wally was moved to the Australian Light Horse, but mainly fought as an infantryman. Wally took part in many battles and skirmishes in Northern France and Belgium, before being wounded and hospitalised. He was repatriated firstly to one of the many field hospitals in France before being sent to a French farm to convalesce.
On his return to Hobart he joined the Hobart RSL and then with other Lenah Valley returned servicemen was instrumental in the formation of the Lenah Valley RSL.
He was well respected in the community and with his wife May, one of the leaders in the Lenah Valley CWA. Some of the trees in park opposite are dedicated to members of the CWA.
Wally lived in Suncrest Ave, just a short walk up Pottery Road and said it was a five minute stroll down the hill to the club for a cleansing ale, but took about 45 minutes to walk back …
Wally maintained his membership of the club until his passing in 1986.
For his service to Australia, community and the Lenah Valley RSL Club we heartily thank you.
