Veteran Dedication: LVRSL Dawn Service 2022
This Dawn Service is dedicated to one of the founding members of the Lenah Valley RSL – Percy Thomas Everett.
Percy enlisted in the army on the 20th August 1914 at Brighton, Tasmania, he was 22 years of age and stated his occupation as a blacksmith.
Percy was allocated to the 12th Battalion, A Company which embarked from Hobart on board the A2 “Geelong” on the 20th August 1914, bound for Egypt.
Onboard the A2 “Geelong” there were 440 soldiers from Melbourne, they picked up 912 soldiers from Hobart. The “Geelong was also carried 324 horses.
After a brief stop in Albany, Western Australian Percy’s Battalion proceeded to Egypt, arriving in early December.
In the early hour of the morning on the 25th April 1915 Percy along with his Battalion landed at Gallipoli. The Battalion was heavily involved in establishing and defending the front line of the ANZAC position, and in August contributed of two companies to the attack on Lone Pine. It was the only Battalion in the Brigade to do so.
The 12th Battalion served at ANZAC until the evacuation in December.
One soldier described the event as:
“We were like a mob of ferrets in a rabbit warren. It was one long grave, only some of us were still alive in it.”
1n 1916 Percy caught Mumps where he was transfer to hospital, within 1 month Percy had rejoined his unit at Giza.
Percy had survived Gallipoli but unfortunately on the 29th July 1916 while serving in France he was wounded in action which resulted in the loss of his right eye and deafness in the right ear.
He was transfer to a Military hospital in England and was transferred back to Hobart via Melbourne on board the A29 “Suevie” on the 28 September 1917.
Percy was discharged as a result of illness in Hobart on the 1st January 1918.
Percy attended the first meeting of the Lenah Valley RSL which was held in the Church Hall, Haig Street and elected on the first committee of the Lenah Valley RSL.
Percy passed away on the 24th August 1957 aged 65.
For his service to Australia, and the community, the Lenah Valley RSL Club we heartily thank you.
