Veteran Dedication: LVRSL Dawn Service 2019:
Frederick Harold Hornsby, or Harold as he liked to be called, was one of the founding members of the Lenah Valley RSL.
Harold was working as a labourer in 1915 and along with a few of his mates decided they should enlist. He said that even the army can’t be as bad as working as a labourer.
Harold was 25 years of age when he enlisted and was sent for training at the Claremont Camp. After training his unit travelled to Melbourne where they boarded the ship “Ceramic” on the 23 November 1915.
His unit was originally to reinforce the ANZACS at Gallipoli. But by the time they arrived in Alexander the Gallipoli campaign was over.
He then travelled to Marseilles, where Harold was transferred to the Australian Heavy Trench Mortar. Harold served with distinction on the Western Front but was seriously wounded with a Gun Shot Wound to the chest.
After a long time recuperating in the General Hospital at Rouen in France , Harold transferred to England and then returned to Hobart via Melbourne after his discharge from the A.I.F.
Harold and his family settled in Haigh Street in Lenah Valley.
I expect that his experience of life after the First World War and then seeing the returning soldiers from the Second World War motivated Harold along with many other first and second World War veterans, to call a meeting in February 1946 to see if it was possible to form an RSL sub branch in the area.
That first meeting was held at the Church Hall, Haig Street and Harold was elected to the very first LVRSL committee.
Our club today owes a great debt of gratitude to Harold and those hard working, dedicated founding members. Their foresight formed the backbone of our great club.
Harold remained as an active committeeman and member until his passing in October 1948.
For his service to Australia, the local community and the Lenah Valley RSL Club we heartily thank you.
