Stephen “Steve” Stuart TUFFIN – Veteran Dedication – ANZAC Day 25 April 2026
The Lenah Valley Dawn Service was dedicated to Ellis Erie DEAN - a founding member and the Inaugural president of the Lenah Valley RSL.
We now dedicate and honour this main service to a veteran of WW2, a Life Member of the Lenah Valley RSL, Stephen Stuart Tuffin.
Stephen was born on April 11, 1905, in London the son of Charles Joseph and Laura Lavina TUFFIN - nee ALLEN.
Steve originally enlisted at Fort Direction, TAS on February 24, 1941, he then went to the Hobart Battery, where he was posted to the Specialist Group 111. He was promoted to Bombardier on December 4, 1941.
In June 1942 his was posted back to Fort Direction as Range Finder Sergeant.
Steve then transferred to the ALF on August 21, 1942, and was posted to the Torries Strait Coastal Artillery and finally served on Thursday Island as an Instructor in 1944.
At the time of his enlistment, he was 36 years old, married with 4 children. His former occupation had been an orchardist in Grove, TAS, and it is there that he meet and married his wife Margaret HOWARTH, on October 17, 1925, at New Town.
At the time of his enlistment, they were living in Sandy Bay, but after his demobilisation in November 1945, they built and moved into 4 Alcides Avenue, Lenah Valley in 1950.
Thanks to the CRST, (Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme) Steve became a well-known builder and stonemason, and later built the Rose Garden on the Hobart Domain, as well as the Lenah Valley RSL original war memorial/cenotaph.
Steve and his wife Margaret were involved in the fund raising for the new hall/dining room at the RSL.
