"Charles was born on the 3rd April 1918 in Zeehan Tasmania. He attended school at Campbell Street until he was thirteen years old. His first job was in a wood-yard and the as a trucker driver/ mechanic. He enlisted in the army and was part of the first group to leave from Hobart Railway Station on 20th October 1939 for the Brighton Camp.
From there he was shipped to England on the Queen Mary troopship via Capetown. He witnessed the Battle of Britain and was then transferred to North Africa and then Tobruk. Here he became one of the legendary ‘Rats of Tobruk’
He was injured by a landmine and transferred to the 15th Scottish Hospital in Cairo, before being transferred home in 1942.
Charles has been a member of the RSL for 61 years, 18 years at Lenah Valley RSL.
