OBITUARY: The Honourable Brian Kirkwall Miller AM, known simply as BK, or often BK Miller, passed away on June 6, 2014, aged 93. His was a full life, much of which was dedicated to serving the people of Tasmania.
Born in Queenstown on January 30, 1921, to a local merchant, BK was the youngest of five siblings.
BK was educated at the Mount Lyell School of Mines, Queenstown, and the Hobart Technical College. He returned to Queenstown, where he joined the Mount Lyell Mining Company as a fitter and turner. But his literary desires took over and in 1948 he became a journalist in Queenstown, as well as a clerk with the Queenstown Council.
BK met his future wife Joyce Cashion in Queenstown and they were married on October 15, 1947. Brian and Joyce enjoyed 66 years of marriage until his recent death.
In 1950, Brian and Joyce became parents of twin boys. After discovering that both boys were profoundly deaf, they moved to Hobart to give the boys the benefits of specialist schooling. They settled in Lenah Valley, and BK accepted a position at Glenorchy City Council as the Deputy Council Clerk.
In 1957 he nominated as a Labor candidate for the Legislative Council, being elected and commencing a long and distinguished political career that was to span the next 30 years. During that time he held many ministerial portfolios, including tourism, immigration, police, racing and gaming and health services. BK is survived by his wife Joyce, two sons, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. BK will forever be remembered, whether it be at the Supreme Court or at the Botanical Gardens, he will forever have an imprint on the Tasmanian community.
